Happy Halloween!

Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and cauldron bubble.

     – Act IV, Scene 1 from Macbeth (1606) by William Shakespeare

I’m all dressed up as a witch for my daughter’s kindergarten class party today.  She told me that I should be a half-good/half-bad witch.  I don’t think I even need to dress up for that!
My husband and I were blood-chillingly [...]

Little Monsters

Our five-year-old daughter thought it would be a fun game to scare our two-year-old one day, so she chased her little sister down the hall roaring in her ferocious beast voice with hands help up like intimidating claws.
Our two-year-old learned the game well, and the next day began chasing her older sister around and roaring for all she was worth.  The tables [...]

Holiday Traditions

I know it’s a little early with Halloween still right around the corner, but I am already thinking about Christmas.  There’s a good reason for this.  I’m in the process of writing two articles about holiday events and traditions for the next issue of McHenry County Living magazine.
Is there anything special that your town does [...]

Family Portrait

Did anyone watch Desperate Housewives on Sunday night?  There was a scene that featured a rather vindictive kindergarten teacher who asked her students to draw pictures of their families.  She relished displaying them on parents’ night, so that mothers and fathers could get a good look at the raw interpretation of how their children really saw them.  There were pictures of parents [...]

Book Review: Nation by Terry Pratchett

Terry Pratchett’s most recent youth novel, Nation, is a fantasy which centers around two extraordinary adolescents, Mau and Daphne.  While Mau is a boy on the brink of completing his tribal ritual which would usher him into manhood, a tsunami strikes, taking everyone Mau has ever known and leaving him — he fears — without a soul.  Daphne enters his life literally on the wave of [...]

Bye-Bye, Mommy!

My children have grown used to me getting caught up in my writing and other desk work.  When they see me at my computer, they sometimes close the glass French doors to my office, while they play (not so quietly) in the living room.
Yesterday, my two-year-old told me, “Bye-bye Mommy.  See you in a couple days!”
She didn’t intend [...]

Book Club: Three Cups of Tea by David Oliver Relin and Greg Mortenson

I’ve belonged to a few book clubs over the years, and have recently joined another one.  It’s more of an excuse to get together with some girlfriends who I don’t get to see often enough, really, but I also welcome the opportunity to hear and share opinions about what we read.  With the review books I constantly [...]

Book Signing: Oct. 11, 2008

I have another book signing tomorrow for my recent release, Trout Valley, the Hertz Estate, and Curtiss Farm.  Trout Valley Mayor Bob Baker, who wrote the Introduction and the Afterword for the book, will also be there to sign copies.
I know that a good portion of you are not in the same country much less the same city. [...]

Little Rock Stars

While eating lunch yesterday, my two-year-old daughter told me, “I wanna be tar.”
“What sweetie?” I asked her.
“I wanna be tar!” she repeated with emphasis.
In response to the confusion on my face, my five-year-old daughter added helpfully, “She wants to be a star.”
“A star?” I asked. “Like a star in the sky?”
“No Mommy,” my five-year-old rolled [...]

Town Hall Presidential Debate

Here are a few debate follow-up discussion questions for anyone who might be interested in continuing the conversation.  Please feel free to answer any or all of them, or offer your general opinion on the town hall debate.

Did you watch the Town Hall debate of the U.S. presidential candidates last night?
Who do you think was the [...]
